civil society

Non-governmental organizations have been active with the United Nations since its creation in 1945.

They contribute in various ways, alongside the Secretariat and its programs, funds, and agencies, to advancing the objectives of the United Nations.

Consulted by Member States, non-governmental organizations take part in a wide range of activities including information dissemination, awareness-raising and education, policy advocacy, operational projects, participation in intergovernmental processes, and the provision of services and technical expertise.

a special
consultative statuts

The economic and social council remains the only United Nations body equipped with a mechanism for the participation of non-governmental organizations.

This accreditation framework benefits both the United Nations and non-governmental organizations through consultative status, which provides the opportunity to:

Share analyses drawn from field experience, raise awareness at an early stage, support the monitoring and implementation of international agreements, help inform the public on relevant issues, play a major role in advancing the goals and objectives of the United Nations, and provide essential input during events organized by the United Nations.

accredited
representatives

On a daily basis, non-governmental organizations are able to attend international conferences and events, submit written and oral statements at these meetings, organize side events, access United Nations headquarters and offices, and engage in networking and advocacy activities.

An accredited non-governmental organization benefits from annual access badges to United Nations headquarters and offices: 7 for New York City, 7 for Geneva, and 7 for Vienna, as well as up to 9 temporary access badges that may be used simultaneously.

Two badges are reserved for the presidency of the non-governmental organization.
